Description

Students will trace the formal and thematic developments of the American novel, focusing on the relationship between writers and readers, the conditions of publishing, innovations in the novel’s form, and the novel’s engagement with history. Selections may be based on a historical perspective, the works of a particular writer or group of writers, a particular theme, or a literary type. Past topics include Troublemakers and Outsiders, Pioneer Women and Civil War Narratives. May be repeated for credit with change in topic. Prerequisite: ENG 120.
